The Remarkable History of Concorde
Few aircraft have ever achieved the legendary status of Concorde. Developed through a pioneering partnership between Britain and France, Concorde made its first flight in 1969, instantly rewriting expectations of what commercial air travel could be.
When it entered passenger service on the 21 January 1976, Concorde became the world’s first supersonic passenger jet – capable of flying at over twice the speed of sound, reaching speeds of around 1,350 mph (Mach 2). Suddenly, journeys that once took eight hours could be completed in little more than three.
Its most famous route was between London and New York, becoming a symbol of glamour, prestige, and cutting-edge technology. Concorde flew for nearly three decades and became one of the most distinctive aircraft ever built. Though it retired in 2003, it remains an enduring part of Britain’s national story – and a reminder of a time when the future of travel felt limitless.
Not the First Aviation Anniversary on a UK Coin…

Over this time, the charity has supported more than one million young people, particularly those facing unemployment or challenges in education, to prepare for work, secure jobs or start businesses.
Formerly known as The Prince’s Trust, the organisation became The King’s Trust in 2024, reflecting His Majesty’s ongoing support. Its 50th anniversary in 2026 is marked by the release of a new UK 50p celebrating the charity’s lasting impact. The coin features a reverse design by Jessica Gregorio, a former beneficiary of The King’s Trust, adding special significance to this commemorative issue.
Importantly, this 50p will be exclusively available in the 2026 Annual Coin Set and will not be released individually later in the year.
British Grand Prix 50p
The British Grand Prix was first held in 1926 at Brooklands, the UK’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, before moving to Silverstone in 1948, where it has since become a staple of the Formula One World Championship calendar.
Located in the heart of England, Silverstone has played host to countless memorable moments in British motorsport history, including iconic victories by legends such as Jackie Stewart, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Lewis Hamilton.
Issued in 2026, this UK 50p commemorates the 100th anniversary of the British Grand Prix and marks the first time the event has been celebrated on UK coinage. The coin features a dynamic reverse design by Interstate, paying tribute to the race’s extraordinary legacy.
ZSL London Zoo £2
Onto the £2 coins, the first of which celebrates the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). Founded in 1826, ZSL has spent two centuries protecting and restoring wildlife across the globe.
The organisation founded and operates London Zoo, while also working internationally to help people and wildlife thrive together in more than 70 countries worldwide.
Marking 200 years of ZSL’s vital work, this UK £2 coin celebrates the charity’s enduring conservation legacy. The coin features a reverse design by Jonathan Olliffe, while the edge inscription bears the words “RESTORING WILDLIFE TOGETHER”, reinforcing the message at the heart of ZSL’s mission.
HMS Beagle £2
The second £2 coin celebrates HMS Beagle, a ship whose voyages played a crucial role in the history of exploration and science. Entering service in 1826, the vessel is particularly famous for its second voyage, during which naturalist Charles Darwin shaped his ideas that would later underpin his theory of evolution.
Issued to mark HMS Beagle’s 200th anniversary, this UK £2 coin celebrates the ship’s remarkable legacy. The reverse design by William Webb offers a striking depiction of the vessel, while the edge inscription bears the words “THE VOYAGE OF THE BEAGLE”.
100th Birthday of Queen Elizabeth II £5
Completing the 2026 Annual set is the £5 coin, issued to mark 100 years since the birth of Queen Elizabeth II. During her historic reign, Elizabeth II became the longest-serving monarch in British history and appeared on more UK coinage than any monarch before her.
To commemorate the centenary of her birth, this UK £5 coin pays tribute to her extraordinary life and lasting legacy. The coin features a reverse design by renowned heraldic artist Timothy Noad, while the edge inscription bears the poignant words “A LIFE WELL LIVED, A PROMISE WITH DESTINY KEPT”.
