NOW BOARDING: The 2026 UK Concorde 50p!
With its unmistakable silhouette and legendary story, Concorde has long stood as a symbol of British innovation and ambition. And now, to mark 50 years since Concorde’s first commercial flight (21 January 1976), this supersonic icon is being celebrated on a brand-new UK 50p!

The Golden Age of Flight
This marks the first time Concorde has appeared on a UK coin, and the design captures its legacy brilliantly. Osborne Ross’ striking artwork shows the iconic aircraft traversing the globe, with “CONCORDE” rendered in classic departure board-style typography – a fitting nod to the golden age of flight.

The Remarkable History of Concorde
Few aircraft have ever achieved the legendary status of Concorde. Developed through a pioneering partnership between Britain and France, Concorde made its first flight in 1969, instantly rewriting expectations of what commercial air travel could be.

When it entered passenger service on the 21 January 1976, Concorde became the world’s first supersonic passenger jet – capable of flying at over twice the speed of sound, reaching speeds of around 1,350 mph (Mach 2). Suddenly, journeys that once took eight hours could be completed in little more than three.

Its most famous route was between London and New York, becoming a symbol of glamour, prestige, and cutting-edge technology. Concorde flew for nearly three decades and became one of the most distinctive aircraft ever built. Though it retired in 2003, it remains an enduring part of Britain’s national story – and a reminder of a time when the future of travel felt limitless.
Not the First Aviation Anniversary on a UK Coin…
While the Concorde 50p is an exciting new release, it isn’t the first time British aviation has been celebrated on UK coinage.
In 2017, The Royal Mint issued the First World War Aviation £2 as part of its five-coin series honouring key milestones of the First World War. Its design, depicting a pilot alongside an airman photographing the ground below, paid tribute to the Royal Flying Corps and the crucial reconnaissance work carried out to help protect Britain’s skies.

Just a year later, aviation was back in the spotlight with the 2018 RAF Centenary £2 series. This five-coin set celebrated 100 years of the RAF with designs featuring some truly iconic symbols and aircraft – from the RAF Badge to the Vulcan, Sea King helicopter, Lightning II, and of course the legendary Spitfire.

More recently, in 2025, collectors welcomed the hugely popular Red Arrows 50p, celebrating the RAF’s world-famous aerobatic display team. With its energetic design, it quickly became a firm favourite – capturing the precision, teamwork and exhilaration the Red Arrows are known for.

With aviation commemoratives proving so popular, it’s no surprise that Concorde – arguably one of the most famous aircraft in the world – has now been honoured on a UK coin in its own right.
