Why you mustn’t pay £1,000 (or even £16,000) on ebay for the new Paddington 50p…
There’s been much excitement this week for Change Checkers following the accidental early release of a small number of new Paddington 50p coins.

The first coins were discovered late last week and quickly made their way onto collectors’ forums and ebay, with one attracting a “sold price” of £16,000 – prompting interest from a number of national newspapers.

Of course, in reality, it’s unlikely that the transaction will ever complete at that price and certainly it’s not the time to be bidding on ebay for the new coin as The Royal Mint has confirmed the release date for the new Paddington 50p Coin as 18th June, with a second design, featuring Paddington outside Buckingham palace, following later in the year (also available to pre-order on Monday).

The new coin will be available in the official Royal Mint Presentation Pack, which usually sells for around £10 or in a Change Checker “Certified Brilliant Uncirculated” Presentation for £3.99 from www.westminstercollection.com
Coloured Silver 50p Collector’s Edition also confirmed…
Limited numbers of the Silver Proof Collector’s Edition of the Paddington 50p coin have also been seen in some Post Offices ahead of the 18th June release date.

Again these will be properly available online from 18 June, with a confirmed Limited Edition Presentation of 60,000.
Glad to pay a bit extra for uncirculated and ain’t too fussed if they drop in value

Lovely coins, but I’m not going to add to all this profiteering by paying over face value for one: I will be patient and enjoy the challenge of change checking to get mine for 50p (next year or the year after probably) – just hope enough actually minted for circulation.
Hi Jim, these coins will be on sale for more than face value due to the fact that they are Brilliant Uncirculated, so are in mint condition, with no scuffs and scratches. I totally agree with the thrill of finding a coin in your change as well though, so do let us know when you find them! Best of luck, Rachel

Although this coin is common, the Beatrix Potter 50ps are the most sought-after 50p series and so you are likely to find collectors that are willing to pay more than face value for the coin, especially if it is in mint condition.
Why don’t the Mint tell us how many coins will be in circulation before release? It would stop silly prices being paid for none rare coins, leaving more money in our pockets for the rare ones.

Royal mint’s greed knows no bound. It all started with Beatrix potter limited edition of 15000, next year it was 30000 and this year it was 35000 for some of the beatrix potter silver proof.
Now with paddington, they are producing 60000. It is going to be absolutely worthless coin like all other beatrix potter silver proof that are selling for less than royal mint’s original price on ebay.
Zero value from collector’s perspective and too expensive considering they are not even rare, What a waste even though the coin does look beautiful.
Knowing the enormous interest in the Paddington and B Potter coins, I think it is a shame that there are not many more of them available. Then all this silly panic buying on eBay would stop.

It’s the same with all sorts of things. Recently the last Arsene Wenger home game programme was selling at high prices as they had sold out on match day. I waited and asked Arsenals shop if more would become available,which they did and bought one at face value.
