Young people leading the charge in new UK Banknote design ideas

In what could be the biggest shake-up in banknote design in over 50 years, the Bank of England has invited the public to help shape the future of our UK Banknotes, and the response has been overwhelming!

Thousands of people have already submitted their ideas, with an incredible number coming from young people, despite many now turning to mobile and contactless payments over physical cash. It just goes to show that the younger generation still value the nation’s physical money.

A new look for a new generation

Among the first sneak peeks of suggested designs are some striking and deeply meaningful symbols of Britain, including a robin, iconic bridges and the beloved Sycamore Gap tree.

These early designs, shared by the Bank of England, highlight just how much banknotes are seen as more than just a way to pay, they’re a canvas for national pride.

Inspiring young people

Even school children are getting involved, and a recent visit to Co-op Academy Woodlands in Leeds by Chief Cashier, Victoria Cleland, inspired some beautifully detailed submissions. One child drew a dolphin leaping across a £10 note, whilst another paid tribute to the Angel of the North on their design.

Your chance to shape history

Remember, it’s not just children and young people who can submit designs and have their say, anyone can take part! Whether that’s providing your opinion on which themes you think would be best suited to our new UK Banknotes, or completely designing a new note yourself, the Bank of England want your input.

The public consultation is live until 31st July 2025, so head to the Bank of England’s website to submit your vote.

The final decision will rest with the Bank’s Governor, but this is a rare opportunity for everyday collectors, history lovers, and design enthusiasts to help shape the future of UK currency.

All very well done banknotes I would be very happy with a mix of sycamore Gap and the dolphin.

I’d like to see Stonehenge on a bank note or the signing of the Magna Carta, something historical
