Britain has a new RAREST 50p! Could it be in your pocket?

Hold on to your wallets, Britain! There’s a NEW rarest 50p in circulation, and it’s just knocked the legendary Kew Gardens 50p off the top spot – for the FIRST TIME in 15 years!

Introducing the Salmon 50p, and you won’t believe how scarce it is. Only a jaw-dropping 200,000 of these coins were released into circulation in November 2023. That means just ONE in 335 people in the UK could have the chance of snagging one. Is it sitting in your pocket right now?

Only 200,000 2023 dated Salmon 50ps entered circulation

Something fishy is going on…

Collectors are in a frenzy, desperately scouring their change to get their hands on this rare beauty before it’s too late. And some lucky few have already struck gold, listing their Salmon 50p coins on eBay for as much as £23 to £50. That’s more than 50 TIMES its face value!

Collectors have already been paying a pretty penny for a circulating Salmon 50p on the secondary market

But hold on tight – with this latest shocking revelation, those prices are expected to skyrocket!

*UPDATE*

Since the news broke this morning, the price of Salmon 50ps on the secondary market have soared, with some selling for nearly £150!

Rarer than the Kew Gardens 50p

If you thought the Kew Gardens 50p was the ultimate collector’s item with only 210,000 in circulation, think again! That coin, regularly fetching £150 to £250 on the secondary market, has even hit the dizzying heights of £1,000 in listings! The new Salmon 50p is hot on its tail, and it could be worth even more in the months to come.

And here’s the best part – You could have one in your change right now!

While the Kew Gardens 50p has had 15 years for collectors to squirrel it away, the Salmon 50p is fresh out of the water – meaning this could be your best chance to snap up the UK’s new rarest coin. Imagine if you had grabbed a Kew Gardens 50p back in 2009, knowing how prized it would become… Now, the Salmon 50p offers you a second chance at coin-collecting glory!

The 2023 Salmon 50p is 1.05 times rarer than the Kew Gardens 50p

The race is on!

With a mintage of just 200,000, this new king of coins firmly takes the throne, leaving the Kew Gardens 50p in the dust.

The race is truly on to track one down, will you be one of the lucky collectors to find the new ‘holy grail’ of change collecting before its too late? Best of luck everyone, and happy hunting!

Secure the collector’s edition

If you haven’t been lucky enough to find a Salmon 50p in the wild, don’t worry! You can still secure the Brilliant Uncirculated version for your collection, alongside SEVEN other new King Charles III coins in the New UK Coinage Set.

What’s more, the coins in this set feature a special privy mark on the obverse, setting them apart from the ones you’ll find in your change.

Was wondering, I know the non privy 2023 salmon 50p is meant have a low mintage of 200k, however there’s been no figures of how many of the privy 2023 50ps have been minted, does anyone know or have a idea of these figures or can help shed light on them, as who’s to say the privy marked ones are even rarer, as we await figures, thanka

    • Kate on November 4, 2024 at 9:40 am

Hi Steve, we don’t know yet definitively how many 2023 Salmon 50ps with privy mark were minted, but we’ll update you when we know!

  3. Kassandra fisk on October 17, 2024 at 3:45 pm

What does privy mark mean please. as I have one with no date .thankyou.

    • Kate on October 21, 2024 at 12:08 pm

Hi Kassandra, the privy mark is a small crown next to the King’s head on the obverse of the coin. It only features on the collector versions of the coins, so you won’t find a privy mark on the Salmon 50ps in your change. The date on your coin should be on the obverse (head) side of the coin around the edge.
      I hope that helps, Kate

  4. STEVE on October 16, 2024 at 3:10 pm

Hi here’s a question? Do you think RM released the figures of the non privy salmon 50p so folks would rush out and buy the full sets as they still able to buy from RM, as RM have not released the figures for the privy salmon sets

  5. Jeffrey lewis on October 13, 2024 at 4:41 pm

I have a King Charles 111 fifty pence piece
Uncrowned 2022 is it worth anything?

  6. Mike on October 12, 2024 at 10:24 pm

Which of the 2023 released Atlantic Salmon 50p coins is the rarest, the one with the privy mark or the one without the mark?

  7. Andrea on October 12, 2024 at 9:25 am

Given the difficulty in buying the definitive 50p Salmon for circulation (without the privy mark) online, will it be possible to buy it at a “human/normal price” from you? Will it also be possible to buy from you the other definitive coins issued for circulation in 2023 without the privy mark (1p, 5p, 10p, 20p, £1)? Thank you!

    • Kate on October 14, 2024 at 1:57 pm

Hi Andrea, unfortunately we don’t sell the circulation version of the Salmon 50p or the other coins in the New UK Coinage set. The only way to purchase a Salmon 50p is either in the New UK Coinage set (which will be the privy mark version), or on the secondary market (the circulating version without a privy mark).
      I hope that helps, Kate

  8. Jose on October 11, 2024 at 2:27 pm

Sooo im really stumped on this one.. The Atlantic salmon 2024 coin with privy mark i get is not in question, but the very first release of the Atlantic Salmon 50p in 2023 definitive set is that worth more too? So whilst it has a privy mark will it follow like the KEW coins bunc ones and pieforts etc being worth good money?

  9. John on October 10, 2024 at 2:35 pm

Do we know if the 200k number applies just to the 2023 coins. I have seen 2024 Salmon 50ps on ebay and believe the mintage numbers will be made available about this time next year, meaning the 2024 coins may not have the same low mintage. Can you confirm ? thanks

    • Kate on October 14, 2024 at 2:00 pm

Hi John, there are currently no 2024 dated Salmon 50ps in circulation as far as we’re aware. The 200,000 mintage figure is just for 2023 dated circulating Salmon 50ps without the privy mark.
Mintage figures do get released around this time each year for the previous year, so we’re yet to know if any 2024 dated Salmon 50ps will go into circulation, if any.
      I hope that helps, Kate

      • Keith buchanan on October 19, 2024 at 5:03 pm

I just got a 2024 salmon coin without a privy mark on Ebay kate, so what does that mean?

      • Kate on October 21, 2024 at 12:13 pm

Hi Keith, it sounds like you’ve got one of the 200,000 circulation Salmon 50ps – a great addition to any collection!

  13. Ali on October 8, 2024 at 2:44 am

Hi is the circulated 50p salmon more collectable than the one in the set?

    • Kate on October 8, 2024 at 1:30 pm

Hi Ali, generally, circulating coins with low mintages are most desirable as you’re able to find them in your change, however Brilliant Uncirculated versions can also be collectable if they have a low mintage.
      I hope that helps, Kate

  14. Daren on October 7, 2024 at 10:52 pm

How many of the salmon 50p with the privy mark on them are in circulation minted

    • Kate on October 9, 2024 at 9:09 am

Hi Daren, it’s the circulating 2023 Salmon 50p without the privy mark that has a mintage of 200,000. We’re not sure yet how many Brilliant Uncirculated Salmon 50ps within the sets were minted but we’ll updated when we know.
      I hope that helps, Kate

  15. Steve on October 7, 2024 at 9:26 pm

There are 200,000, salmon 50p minted for circulation in our change. How many are minted in the definitive annual coin sets?

    • Kate on October 9, 2024 at 9:10 am

Hi Steve, we’re not sure yet how many Brilliant Uncirculated Salmon 50ps within the sets were minted but we’ll updated when we know.

  16. Tim on October 7, 2024 at 8:19 pm

Hi as a 50p coin subscriber will we be getting a BU 2023 salmon coin

    • Kate on October 8, 2024 at 9:53 am

Hi Tim, the BU Salmon 50p is not currently available individually, the only way to get hold of it is in the New UK Coinage Set, or you can secure the 2024 dated Salmon 50p in the 2024 Annual Definitive Coin Set from The Royal Mint.
      I hope that helps, Kate

  17. Simon on October 7, 2024 at 5:38 pm

I had seen things online saying that there could be 500,000 in circulation, but checked the Royal Mint website this morning as I keep an eye on the yearly mintage figures. I nearly fell of my chair in shock as I have two of them, and my father who also collects 50p’s also has two.

    • Kate on October 8, 2024 at 9:47 am

You are one of the lucky ones Simon! The Royal Mint did originally say that 500,000 Salmon 50ps would enter circulation but they have now revised this number and it is indeed now rarer than the Kew Gardens 50p.
      Kate

      • Simon on October 8, 2024 at 11:17 am

I still can’t believe that I have two of them, and will be closely checking in case I do get anymore of them in my change. I guess this is gonna change the Scarcity Index and knock Kew Gardens from the top for the first time in 15 years. They are now being valued at £110 on CoinHunter in very good condition, and being listed on eBay for over £100.

  18. Toby wmorh on October 7, 2024 at 4:01 pm

    Wow that’s good news

  19. Frank WK on October 7, 2024 at 2:47 pm

Exciting News for collectors, but is this coin dated 2923 with or without the ‘privy’ mark?

    • Kate on October 7, 2024 at 3:10 pm

Hi Frank, that’s correct, this is the 2023 Salmon 50p without the privy mark which entered circulation in November 2023.
      Kate

      • Kieron on October 7, 2024 at 3:48 pm

        Hi Kate,
So do we know the mintage of the Salmon in the 2023 Definitive set with a privy mark?
Does this mean the 2023 circulated Salmon (without the privy mark is the rare one)
        Thanks
        Kieron.

      • Kate on October 8, 2024 at 9:42 am

Hi Kieron, yes it’s the circulation Salmon 50p without the privy mark that has the mintage of 200,000. We don’t yet know the definitive mintage figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated 2023 Salmon 50p with the privy mark, but we’ll update you as soon as this information is announced.
        I hope that helps, Kate

      • Frank WK on October 7, 2024 at 3:53 pm

Fantastic, thank you will be keeping a very keen eye on all 50p’s received.

      • Simon Nock on October 8, 2024 at 6:51 am

        Kate, I am confused!
Is the it the circulation Salmon 50p that is restricted to 200000 or the Privy marked 50p? Is it dated 2023 or 2024? I am a subscriber but I do not yet have a none privy marked Salmon 50p. Will I receive an 2024 Salmon 50p as part of my subscription? So many questions. Sorry

      • Kate on October 8, 2024 at 9:55 am

Hi Simon, yes it’s the 2023 dated circulation Salmon 50p without the privy mark that has the mintage of 200,000. There are currently no 2024 dated Salmon 50ps in circulation that we’re aware of. We don’t yet know the definitive mintage figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated 2023 Salmon 50p with the privy mark, but we’ll update you as soon as this information is announced.
Unfortunately, the BU Salmon 50p is not currently available individually so you won’t receive it in your 50p subscription, the only way to get hold of it is in the New UK Coinage Set, or you can secure the 2024 dated Salmon 50p in the 2024 Annual Definitive Coin Set from The Royal Mint.

The price on ebay has already shot up

    • Kate on October 7, 2024 at 3:09 pm

  21. Andy Wilkinson on October 7, 2024 at 9:17 am

What if I don’t want the full set? I only collect 50p pieces.

    • Kate on October 7, 2024 at 3:07 pm

Hi Andy, unfortunately other than finding one in your change, the only way to get your hands on a Salmon 50p is in the New UK Coinage set or the 2024 Definitive Annual Coin Set.
      I hope that helps! Kate

      • Dave on October 10, 2024 at 9:13 pm
