90 Years of a Family Favourite
First launched in the UK in 1935, Monopoly quickly became a household name. Introduced to the UK by Leeds based game company Waddingtons, the board famously featured London landmarks – though over the decades, countless other editions have popped up showcasing towns, cities, and even fictional sites.

A Winning Design
To mark this milestone, a UK 50p coin has been issued. Designed by product designer Bella Biggs, the reverse of the coin perfectly captures the spirit of the game, featuring iconic elements such as classic player tokens, property cards and Mr. Monopoly himself!

Monopoly 50p joins a wide range of themes on UK 50p Coins
For more than 50 years, we’ve seen an incredible array of themes celebrated on UK 50p coins, and it’s become the favourite denomination for many collectors.
From the very first commemorative UK 50p coin issued in 1973 celebrating the UK’s accession to the European Economic Community, to the 2020 Brexit 50p marking the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union – there have been several UK coins issued to mark important political events.
We’ve also seen countless UK 50p coins issued celebrating popular culture icons such as Paddington Bear and Harry Potter, as well as military milestone like D-Day and the Battle of Britain. And most recently, the very first Royal 50p was issued in 2022 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Monopoly 50p is the first time a board game has been featured on a UK 50p coin, and adds to the wide range of themes we see on our commemorative coins.
