The FIRST Coins of King Charles III – revealed today…

The Royal Mint has JUST been confirmed that a brand-new range of coins is set to be issued on Monday 3rd October at 9am, commemorating Queen Elizabeth II’s life and reign.

2022 UK King Charles III 50p obverse/reverse.

And in particularly interesting news for Change Checkers, the coins will feature the brand-new portrait of King Charles III for the very first time.

The King’s effigy has been created by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings, and has been personally approved by His Majesty.

In keeping with tradition, The King’s portrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II.

As well as the new Royal 50p, a new £5 coin will also be available in the range, as shown below.

The 50p will also enter circulation in the coming months and will also be available alongside the £5 coin in a range of denominations and specifications. Register your interest below.

Any idea when the 50p will be released into general circulation? As far as I am aware the Pride 50p and Birmingham Commonwealth Games 50p have still not been released?

    • Alexandra on October 3, 2022 at 12:29 pm

      Hi Joanne,

The Pride 50p coins were due for circulation this summer. The Commonwealth Games 50p were not intended for circulation. The Royal Mint have confirmed this brand new coin will enter circulation by December of this year.

      Best,
      Alex

What is happening to the Harry Potter 50ps, the 10 years of the BBC 50p and the 25 years of the £2 coins sets?

    What are the prices?

    • Alexandra on October 3, 2022 at 12:30 pm

Prices start from £4.99 (+p&p) for the single 50p coin.

Does CC know which coins are in this ‘range’?
Is it just a 50p and £5 design, or is the ‘range’ more extensive?
How I interpreted the email: there would be a ‘memoriam collection’.

Coin ranges lately are very drawn-out.
I’d like more information before I buy into this.

Hi Paul, the full range will be revealed on Monday when the coins become available to purchase.

Exciting news. Will the coin entering circulation be 2022 dated?

    • Rachel on September 30, 2022 at 2:12 pm

Very exciting news! We can’t wait! The Royal Mint have said the coin should be in circulation in the coming months, so we would expect this to be 2022 dated.

Pity the mint didn’t go with the traditional Latin version of our latest monarch. Personally I think it should be CAROLVS III. Victoria and Elizabeth II are the exceptions as there is no Latin equivalent.

    • Alan on September 30, 2022 at 2:12 pm

The Latin for Elizabeth would be Elizabetha wouldn’t it?

In this day and age, rendering a name in Latin is unnecessary. The Latin inscription also means very little to most people, whether they know what the English translation is or not.

Hello Checkers, new coin era starts next week! Looking forward to seeing coin set but will take some getting used to! How quickly will other coins follow into circulation?

    • Alexandra on September 30, 2022 at 8:54 am

      Hi Jane,

It’s a very big moment in history for us coin collectors! This is the first coin issue to feature His Majesty’s portrait and we’re yet to hear confirmation of other coins entering circulation at this time. Stay tuned – we’ll keep Change Checkers posted as we find out more.

      Thanks,
      Alex
